— What Claude Mythos Signals About a New Baseline for Cybersecurity —

In cybersecurity, the ground rules are finally starting to shift.

For a long time, discovering sophisticated vulnerabilities and staging zero-day attacks was treated as the domain of nation-states, advanced persistent threat groups, or a small circle of elite researchers. Actually weaponizing flaws—deep knowledge of major operating systems and browsers, chaining multiple issues, breaking out of sandboxes, and turning it all into reliable exploit code—took enormous expertise, experience, and time.

Advances in AI are now shaking that assumption hard.

A vivid example is the reporting and announcements around Anthropic’s “Claude Mythos Preview.” Through Project Glasswing, Anthropic has signaled it intends to use Claude Mythos Preview to help defend critical software. Its official page lists launch partners including AWS, Apple, Broadcom, Cisco, CrowdStrike, Google, JPMorgan Chase, the Linux Foundation, Microsoft, NVIDIA, and Palo Alto Networks—underscoring a defensive mission for software at critical-infrastructure scale. At the same time, Claude Mythos is not publicly available. Press coverage describes a model capable of finding serious vulnerabilities in major operating systems and browsers, with outsized risk if misused. The Guardian cites an evaluation by the U.K. AI Security Institute reporting that Mythos completed a 32-step cyberattack simulation three out of ten times. Naturally, all of this rests on public information and journalism—nothing a company should swallow whole without verification. Still, the point is bigger than any single model’s exact specs. What matters is the trajectory: AI is beginning to execute advanced offensive and defensive security work at speeds approaching—or in some dimensions exceeding—human experts.

To me, that is a matter of when, not if.


When the expertise moat starts to erode

Even if Claude Mythos only runs in tightly controlled environments today, comparable capabilities will show up from other vendors tomorrow. As models improve at reasoning, reading code, and acting as autonomous agents, parts of the work that once required rare human specialists will get radically more efficient—for defenders, that is a huge opportunity, and for attackers, an equally large weapon.

Traditional cyberattacks leaned on a moat of specialized knowledge. Finding bugs, writing exploit code, tailoring payloads to the target, evading detection, escalating privileges—each step demanded serious skill. Once AI can assist those steps interactively, the pool of capable attackers may widen: you no longer have to be an expert if you can iterate with an AI at your side.

If attackers adopt AI, defenders who refuse AI will lose the race on speed and scale.

Here is the crux: organizations cannot afford to stay stuck in “whether to use AI.” I believe “no AI” stops being a viable long-term posture, because if attackers use AI and defenders do not, you cannot keep up on speed or volume.

Classic security programs still center on rule-based detection, periodic vulnerability assessments, patching, SOC monitoring, and incident response plans—and they will stay important. But AI-era attacks may be faster, more customized at scale, and far more numerous. A purely human loop—humans alone triaging logs, reviewing code, and tracking every vulnerability disclosure—hits a wall.

That is why AI has to be embedded on the defensive side as well.

Examples abound: internal code review, open-source dependency risk reviews, anomaly detection in logs, generating attack hypotheses, organizing the first hours of an incident response, mapping vulnerability intelligence to your asset inventory, and spear-phishing simulations for employees. For SMBs especially, AI can be a practical force multiplier when headcount is tight.


Not “AI adoption”—AI operations design

There is a big caveat, though: this is not a story about giving everyone free rein with AI.

In security, misused AI stops being a defensive tool and becomes an offensive one. Paste proprietary source code, configs, credentials, network diagrams, or customer data into the wrong model and you create disclosure risk. Give an AI agent shell access or broad outbound connectivity and you invite catastrophic mistakes—or abuse.

What enterprises need is not a slide titled “AI adoption,” but a deliberate AI operations design.

Concretely: who may use which tools, for what purposes, with what data, who validates outputs, how far automation may act, how you log usage, what external connectivity is allowed, and how you shut things down when misuse or drift appears.

For security-focused AI in particular, tighten access. Rather than company-wide self-service, start with security operations, IT, selected engineering teams, or explicitly trained owners. Pair that with usage logging, guardrails on confidential inputs, and least privilege for any actions the model can take against external systems.


SMBs and the reach of your security talent

This is not a Fortune 500 problem only—if anything, SMBs should be thinking earlier.

Many SMBs cannot justify full-time security staff. A single IT owner wearing multiple hats is common. For those teams, AI can help interpret vulnerability bulletins against the software you actually run, triage suspicious email, summarize log anomalies, and draft policies and checklists—work that becomes realistic with the right controls.

Flip side: deploying powerful AI agents without security ownership can increase risk. Granting deep access when nobody is accountable for reviews, logging, or incident handling elevates insider threat, operational error, and data exposure. For SMBs, the first move is rarely “ship the biggest model everywhere”; it is writing usage rules, tightening permissions, keeping logs, defining prohibited inputs, and standing up a lightweight review loop.

The skills we hire for in security will change, too.

Networks, operating systems, middleware, cloud, cryptography, malware analysis, and penetration testing still matter—and will keep mattering. Layered on top, prompting AI effectively, grading its answers, catching hallucinations, and steering follow-up questions become core skills.

That mindset is close to what people call “vibe coding.”

Vibe coding is the practice of pairing with an AI to describe requirements, generate code, run it, debug, and iterate. Security teams will adopt the same rhythm: “Where is this code dangerous?”, “What in these logs looks like an early breach?”, “Could this architecture support privilege escalation?”, “Does this CVE actually affect our stack?”—using AI to spin hypotheses faster while humans stay in the loop.

Do not mistake that for “AI removes the need for expertise.” The opposite is closer to the truth. Judging model output takes domain depth. Models sound confident while wrong; they can cry wolf or miss catastrophic issues. Humans must verify, challenge, and decide.

In other words, security talent evolves from “hands-on-only specialist” to “specialist who can run high-speed hypothesis tests with AI.”


Executive lens and a practical starting order

From a leadership standpoint, this is not a passing tech fad. AI-accelerated offense and defense ties directly to business continuity, customer trust, vendor due diligence, supply-chain risk, and regulatory exposure. A breach does not stay in engineering—it pulls in legal, sales, communications, and customer support. Expect even more questionnaires about your security posture from partners and customers.

That makes the near-term playbook fairly clear.

  1. Inventory which AI tools run where, for which workflows, and under whose account.
  2. Publish explicit rules for feeding confidential or customer data into models.
  3. Stand up controlled pilots owned by security or IT—not a free-for-all.
  4. Govern logging, permissions, outbound connectivity, and what actions automation may take.
  5. Train people to use AI safely—not just “more AI,” but accountable AI.

Claude Mythos is not merely a headline about a “dangerous model.” It is a preview of how the gap will widen between organizations that operationalize AI for defense and those that cling to purely manual playbooks.

In an era where attackers already use AI, “we will skip AI on defense” is a hard strategy to sustain. The winning pattern is not chaos—it is controlled use: narrow permissions, strong logging, scoped use cases, human verification, and continuous improvement. That operating model is on its way to becoming the baseline for enterprise security.

AI can make cyberattacks easier. It can also move cyber defense forward—if you design for it.

Which path you get depends on how deliberately you design AI into operations and upskill your team. Claude Mythos is forcing the conversation: we are past debating “whether to use AI.” The real question is how to use it safely and well.
